“Raccoon tea party”

How I created it
This was the original sketch, would you believe I sketched this way back in 2020?
You can see most of the action and movement of the scene is there already, that’s why it's important to get the looseness and energy in the scene while youre in the sketching phase
It was originally going to be in a cave with some soft sunlight shining down on it. I realised this composition wasn’t the best for the scene and decided to save the background for another day.
I started by thinking about the main focal points, I wanted the viewers eye to focus on three rough areas, the King, the Cake, and the various raccoons all around the table. While I was scratching my chin over the composition I painted in some details of the racoons to see how they would look in my digital oil painting style.
I love this little grumpy King already!
And these cheeky chaps.
But how could this one with the hat NOT be my favourite?
Okay this composition is starting to work now, it reads well so far and theres a nice amount of motion and action to let the eye wander around the artwork. Now let’s add more! Some Racoons proceeding up to the table would help add more depth.
Now lets paint out a background idea! I was imagining them in some sort of castle. Adding in the background lets us tell more of a story and flesh out the environment more. Making that cake a little larger helps draw the eye to it more as a central focal point, so viewers don’t get lost in the action in the background.

Lets give our Highness some more colour and detail…
This wee guy got rendered into this.
And this little bean has clearly had far too much tea.
Now that the king is rendered some more let's give him a throne fit for a trash king!
This Raccoon crossing road sign is perfect for a headboard, needs more road signs though…
Perfect! I think this works really well to add more character and tell more story.
Time to add some trash lying around the floor.
More trash, It is a party after all…
That background was looking entirely too light, lets darken it up and add some details.
…like these big heavy doors and the raccoon emblem in the Lintel. ( I learned a new word today)
That cake was annoying me, lets replace it with a giant trash bin overflowing with delicious garbage! It shall be a Kings feast!
Lots of trash! This is being painted on a 30x20inch digital canvas so theres a lot of detail to get right.
More trash added on top of the table and in the background, its starting to come together!
Some detail added to the teapots, the floral hat and the box the raccoon is carrying in.
That floor needs some texture work, and the trash bin is too clean, lets graffiti it up a bit! This is a bit much though
Toning down the graffiti works better. Under the table was looking FAR too clean so lets add hoards of trash under it.
